1 Week Till Departure

Well, the countdown is set. 1 more week till I fly out of MI and head to DC. So much to do and get ready!

Here are some interesting facts I've discovered about the home I'll be working at (the Jeanne Jugan Residence, pictured at left):

* In 1871, that Father Jacob Ambrose Walter, the fourth pastor of St. Patrick's Church, the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Washington City, welcomed seven Little Sisters of the Poor from France

* Soon after their arrival the Sisters were granted unprecedented permission to beg for donations in the buildings of the federal government. This permission continued all the way up to September 11, 2001 when access to federal buildings became more restricted

* The Jeanne Jugan Residence has had a front row seat to many important national events over the past 170 years. Our Home has welcomed quite a few notable visitors including Eleanor Roosevelt and President and Mrs. George W. Bush. We were also blessed to provide a home to James Cardinal Hickey in his final years.

I thought I'd also share with you all a neat article done by the Washington Examiner about a little sister who has spent most of her 48 years as a religious begging for her sisters and the elderly residents they serve. Her name is Sr. Pauline Kelly. I hope I get to meet her. Here's the link: http://washingtonexaminer.com/local/dc/2011/02/credo-sister-pauline-kelly.

Who is St. Jeanne Jugan?

Thought some of you might be wondering about who the foundress of the Little Sisters is, and a bit more about the congregation. So here's a "crash course video" with some interesting bits of info.

A Summer in DC: 6 Weeks with the Little Sisters of the Poor

In just a couple of weeks I'll be headed out to our Nation's Capital to serve with the Little Sisters of the Poor (lsp). I will be staying at their Jeanne Jugan Residence which is very close to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This will be both an opportunity to help them in their apostolate, which is serving the elderly poor, as well as a chance to really get a taste of their religious life.

I was thinking of how I would keep those who are interested informed about my goings on there. It seemed easiest to make a blog. :-) If you look at the side panel, there is a place to put in your email address so every time I add a post it will show up in your email. I will also try to update via facebook. Hopefully I'll be posting at least once a week. There is also a pictures tab at the top of the blog, where I'll try to upload pics, although they may just be added into the posts.

Happy reading, and please keep me in your prayers as I prepare! God Bless and know you are in mine too.
